Race Day

The Little 100 is upon us. Some of us.

Not me.

Today I took a trip down to Chinatown to look for a Nokia 5610 gel skin at all the street vendors along Canal St. On the way, I got:

A flat tire.
Severely right hooked by an already quite dented Toyota Rav4.
Harassed by a guy in a Sentra who felt I was the reason he had to go so slow through the village. Surely it wasnt the taxis wedging themselves into the intersections, or the towtrucks perpendicular to the roads direction, or the construction barriers.. Nope. Its me. I'm slow. Thats why I don't get to race in the Little 100.

Have a good race guys. Let me know how it goes.

Rusty Life

This photo is from just before a 50km booze cruise in Amsterdam, stopping at four pubs, with 130 less-than-practical bikes. This custom cruiser from Finland has about 400 hours of work into the frame alone. I spent the majority of the following ride talking to this guy (in the ponytail) and his wife (he's got about 250 hours into hers) about his bikes and building process. He's got a number of projects on the go - including cars - every one of them all-out.

Their site is www.rustylife.com; a quote from the bicycles page: "What would kustom kulture be without bicycles? Empty and hollow... So 80's. No one misses such crappy times."

Be careful what you wish for.

Yep. This is the Tom's Restaurant bike rack, as of 7pm tonight.

More big racks.

It seems the internet (or at least the NY corner of it) is all aflutter over some new Public Art style Bike Racks created by NYC resident/musician/artist David Byrne.

In the two weeks I've been here, I've noticed that this entire city is up on his jock. Not that its undeserved, but its just a little odd to me. He's currently got an installation up in a Battery warehouse called 'Playing the Building'.

..but the newest creation of his, hits a little closer to home. literally.

Big racks.

This one is near my place. Outside of the Hungarian Pastry shop. A shop used in Woody Allen's 'Husbands and Wives'.
I was going to lock to it and snap a photo, but its like 2 blocks from my place, so I have no need to bike there. Also, it seems the flickr is already full of pictures of people locking their bikes to David's racks.

I'm not going to get into what the best style of locking would be for each of his abstract racks, as that would be difficult without a couple of different shaped bicycles, different sized locks, and a pile of free time.

What I AM going to do is ponder an even MORE interesting bike rack in my neighbourhood:

This one is outside of Tom's Restaurant, on my street. (otherwise known as the 'Seinfeld Diner', or Tom's Diner from the Suzan Vega song).

Ever since I arrived, this bike has been sitting here.
Two weeks.
Two weeks locked up like this.
Does the owner work at Tom's?
Is this some kind of sick joke?
I want to throw more locks on it.
I want to cut the cable, and lock it up across the street.
I want to see it move.
Argh. it hurts my brain every time I walk by it.
I almost want it gone.
Though I will be sad if it does disappear.

But back on the topic of Art racks, I think the City of Whitehorse did it better some time ago. Here's a shot from wifey's blog:

Get it? Yukon, Pipelines? heh.

Updates on old friends

Under the Rocky in an indoor bike pile is Gramps, the collarbone-healing 6-speed cruiser. Gramps is doing well, enjoying indoor parking. Haley, you could pass on the message.

An old photo of Mr. Sidic from Brandon's flickr that I found entertaining. We'll be seeing Mike this weekend at the Little 100.

Race Preppin'

The Little 100 is this weekend. We finally inducted a fourth member and Lyle leaves. I was so distraught that I put the wrong day on the flyer; it's actually on SUNDAY.

Wednesday night listening to KRS-One, we're looking forward to SUNDAY; we've acquired a fourth and are ready to get drunk.

Rocky Mountain, High.

Sorry, I'd love to keep reading the internet, but I'm going out to ride this thing.

Track Mule

This seems pretty stupid.
Times square. Monday. Rush hour.
Why do I do this?

ech·e·lon [ éshə lòn ]

I killed my Atmos.
Its kind of underwhelming since I wasn't wearing it at the time.
I was really hoping I would get to test it on my head.
It DID save my hard drive though, as proved by this post.
I've already replaced it, with a slightly more economical model.
Not as light, not as cool, but acceptable none the less.
The venting doesn't seem to work as well, but its better than the Pro-tec, which is unbearable in this heat.
I'll just have to ride faster to force the hot air into it.
I better put it to use and get back on my fucking bike.
Watch out Central Park roadies, I'm going to get you on the climbs.

Team BMX wins inaugural East Van Spot Rush

This round of BMX vs. fixed gear freestyle was a win for the little ones. Barber got an extra 27 points added to his score because Louise's initials looked like the number. This day was also another first: the Stairmaster's first rain day. Another thing: the Powell and Clark rail is now painted with something soft and sticky, and I stuck a peg stall in the rain.

Who let these guys run a race?

Thursday, August 07, 2008

Brandon, we have some unfortunate news for you.

Whilst thus far, we have spared you any bizarre Skull-and-Bones-style induction rituals such as gang rape or stencilling your Calfee in Volkswagen Brilliant Black Metallic, we must stress that with membership comes certain obligations, the primary one being doing stupid shit on bicycles. Therefore, we require your Bianchi's attendance at the trick ride. We will supply the riser bar and pink Ourys. Tubulars optional, but highly encouraged.

Hammer!

and then there were four

Its bitter sweet.
I'm going to miss all of this.
Brandon, please take care of these hooligans in my absence.
I'm close to quoting the Golden Girls theme song here.
Enjoy the hatchet.
